Jerry's
mother's family were Millers and Criglers from Virginia. They have
a very interesting German backgound that goes back to the early 1700's,
so Jerry's family has been here almost as long as mine. His
grandmother was a Crigler and through some of Jerry's family and others,
I see that the first Crigler probably arrived early in the 1700's.
His name was Jacob Crigler. Jacob was an emigrant from Silesia,
Germany to Germanna, Spotsylvania Co., Virginia in 1717 with the Germanna Colony II.
You can go to a site on the Internet dedicated to the Germanna settlers
at www.germanna.org .
The
photo below is the Social Security application that Robert Miller signed
on November 24, 1936. It was typed up for him and he didn't notice
that his mother's maiden name, Slough was mis-typed as Slauer.
Unfortunately, misspelling is a common occurrence and the enemy of all
genealogists. Anyone using this spelling would look a long time
and never find this ancestor.
